I just read on FOX News that FL Governor expects oil to make land fall Wednesday

Here is a cool map showing the situation

For Alternative #1, those needed to sleep in tents will need to reserve a site in the Ft. Pickens campground. We will anchor just offshore and those folks pitching tents will have a short hike to the campsites. I assume if oil does start hitting the shore or coming close enough to make us use alternative #1 then there will be plenty of campsites available.

BTW, the folks at Ft. Pickens were very nice and sympathetic but if we were allowed to camp it would start a precedence as other people see our boats and tents on shore that would be bad for the area long-term. Also, some of the shore birds are nesting in the area.

According to this article (link below) it looks like booms will soon be deployed at the Pensacola Pass cutting off passage from Pirates Cove. I assume one of the two alternatives routes will still be options with these booms in place?

According to this article, "As proposed, once the booms are in place, the pass will be closed to barges and other vessels for eight hours a day then reopened to allow them to pass. Booms also will be set up at the pass at Fort McRae and at Perdido Pass."

See http://www.ci.pensacola.fl.us/upload/im ... tyArea.pdf for more details. It appears the channels will largely remain open UNLESS oil actually is threatening the bay.

That's good news!

I was planning on leaving Austin early tomorrow (Saturday) morning to get to Pirates Cove Saturday night. I was going to sail on my own Sunday through Wednesday, then meeting up with everyone on Wednesday night at Pirates Cove. I will try to find someplace with wireless internet to keep up on things, but if the route is changed and we will not meet at Pirates Cove Wednesday night it would be a great help is someone could call and let me know. My cell # is 512-239-0507.

Thanks!

FWIW, here are maps of proposed boom locations, looks like they're going to boom off, sooner or later, Pensacola inlet on both east and west sides in the ICW. That would block -- twice -- last year's route but allow either of Scott's suggested alternatives.

Things seem to be looking up. The booms blocking the intercoastal will only be posted should oil reach the shoreline but so far the slick is holding well to the south and west. Plan is to go ahead and head towards Pirates cove but I am prepared to email everyone, post here, and post on facebook if we need to meet at the alternative site of Pat Johnson's boatyard (817 South E Street, Pensacola Florida 32502). I will also tell the folks at pirates cove and bribe someone with beer money to sit out there and intercept anyone. However, I am still very hopefull that none of this planning will be needed.

Scott, We plan to leave Tuesday morning and won't have email. If you decide against Pirates Cove after Monday night, please leave a message for us on our cell phone (cell number deleted but land line is 904-940-5339)
